In 2015 Chole Dimitriadis became the sixth generation — and the first woman — to run Biolea, an estate organic olive oil producer located in northwestern Crete. Steeped in tradition, with a dedication to sustainable farming and production practices, they have spent the past 20 years improving the processes and standards of olive oil production. They have shifted their efforts to include organic farming without the use of chemical fertilizers or pesticides, arid cultivation to preserve the island's limited fresh water supply, and the discontinuation of heavy machinery usage to help curtail soil erosion. This combination of tradition and innovation has allowed Biolea to produce true cold pressed olive oil that is full of flavor and health benefits, while at the same time creating a sustainable, environmentally friendly farming practice. Nerantzio is not an infused oil. Koroneiki olives harvested from the estate groves are stone milled and cold pressed with locally grown bitter oranges. This process preserves the vitamins, nutrients and aromatic properties of the oil, and, although it is quite a labor intensive method, it results in a distinctive olive oil of superb quality. On the tongue it explodes with an unmistakable punch full of vibrant orange flavor and a teasing tingle of orange rind. An outstanding dipping oil for bread or charcuterie. Drizzle on seafood, grilled lamb and fresh vegetables, or use as a base for dressings and marinades. Try incorporating into baked goods for extra citrus flavor.
